Where do I put/find my home page files?

First, make sure that you have read the policy and filled out the request form. After you have received confirmation that your directory has been created, follow the instructions below.

Please note that you are responsible for editing these files and/or transferring them back and forth from a machine where you want to edit them locally on your computer.

For Faculty

Faculty and staff can access their Web pages on ecelinsrvc.ece.gatech.edu via the NFS mounted filesystem. Your pages are located in /home/www/users/<username> or /home/pages/<username>. (Please note if you are using the command line, you will need to "cd /home/pages/<username>" (without the quotes) or "cd /home/www/users/<username>" (without the quotes) in order to mount the directory; if you are using a "drag-and-drop" GUI, like WinSCP, to upload your files, you will need to specify this path before you connect in order to mount it. See the WinSCP page for details.) The username is your GT account login name that is managed at https://passport.gatech.edu.

You can ssh to ecelinsrvc.ece.gatech.edu to edit the files in a terminal window. If you are familiar with an editor on the UNIX systems such as vi or pico, this will be the easiest method to update the files. If you would prefer to work on these files directly using Mac or PC tools, you will need to use sftp to transfer the files back and forth to ecelinsrvc.ece.gatech.edu. The tool that you can use for ssh on Windows machines is SecureCRT (which is provided by OIT's Software Download site). The tool available for sftp on Windows machines is WinSCP (which is provided by OIT's Software Download site). For Mac OSX machines, you can use the Terminal utility or X11 to use command-line ssh or sftp. Additionally, for sftp on Mac OSX, you can use Fugu.

For Graduate Students

Graduate students can access their Web pages on one of the ecelinsrv machines (listed in the Students section of our Remote Access page) via the NFS mounted filesystem. Your pages are located in /home/webpages/<username>. (Please note if you are using the command line, you will need to "cd /home/webpages/<username>" (without the quotes) in order to mount the directory; if you are using a "drag-and-drop" GUI, like WinSCP, to upload your files, you will need to specify this path before you connect in order to mount it. See the WinSCP page for details.) The username is your GT account login name that is managed at https://passport.gatech.edu.

How do I fix these strange characters in my web pages?

If you use MS Word to create your web pages, and you are seeing strange characters in your pages, try doing the following to fix the problem:

When you have the file open in Word, go to the Tools menu and click on Options. In that new window, click the General tab. Click the button for Web Options, and select the Encoding tab. In the drop-down menu under "Reload the current document as", select "Unicode (UTF-8)". You will need to re-upload the file to the server (you may have to upload the related "<filename>_files" directory, too).

What is the URL (network address) for my home page?

Your home page can be addressed by anyone accessing the the World Wide Web using the URL (or address): http://users.ece.gatech.edu/~username/. Please note that you should try to use relative addressing in your pages rather than hardwiring to a specific machine or path. This greatly helps portability of your Web pages.

How much disk space do I have for my WWW pages?

Each individual user is given a limit of 100 MB of disk space in their users directory. This should be sufficient for each user. However, if you feel you need additional disk space, please send your request to help@ece.gatech.edu.

Research and lab page disk quotas are determined by need, and will be adjusted appropriately for each individual need.
